Basic computing starts with counting. To record counting, our ancestors
used "Grooves filled with pebbles".

our ancestors because the symbol "6" came in to use latter part only.

5 grooves with 10 pebbles each adds to 50 or 5 x 10 = 50.
Multiplication the complex arithmetic are taught to us.

Sir Napier introduced Logarithmic and Anti-logarithmic method to
do mechanicaly multiplication. Take logarithm of Muliplicand and
Multiplier separately, add the resultan logarithmic values and
take anti-log of values which will give you result of multiplication
by mechanial look-up of Logarithmic and Anti-Logarithmic tables.
